HISTORY ASPECTS:
The MiG-19PM, designated Number 335 in East German service, represented one of the first supersonic interceptors flown by the Luftstreitkräfte der Nationalen Volksarmee (LSK/NVA), East Germany's air force during the Cold War. Introduced in the late 1950s, the MiG-19PM was a radar-equipped, missile-only interceptor derived from the base MiG-19 design, tailored specifically for air defense missions against NATO intruders. Aircraft like Number 335 formed part of East Germany's frontline defense, stationed at key bases near the inner German border to respond rapidly to incursions by NATO reconnaissance aircraft and to reinforce the Warsaw Pact's defensive air network.
The MiG-19PM was equipped with the RP-5 Izumrud radar and carried K-5 (AA-1 "Alkali") guided missiles, reflecting the shift in doctrine from gun-based dogfighting to radar-guided missile interception. While its radar and missile systems had limitations compared to Western contemporaries, the aircraft gave East Germany a credible supersonic interceptor capability during a critical phase of the Cold War. Although Number 335 and its fellow East German MiG-19PMs did not see large-scale combat, they played an important deterrent role, frequently scrambled against Western reconnaissance flights along the Iron Curtain and maintaining constant readiness for potential conflict.
Beyond their service in East Germany, the MiG-19 family gained combat experience in the hands of other operators, including in the Vietnam War, Middle Eastern conflicts, and the Indo-Pakistani wars. These battles demonstrated both the strengths and weaknesses of the type, highlighting its excellent climb rate and speed but also the shortcomings of early missile technology. In East German service, however, the MiG-19PM was a stepping stone, bridging the gap between the first-generation MiG-15/17 fighters and more advanced interceptors such as the MiG-21, which soon replaced it in frontline units.
This 1:72 scale model captures the Cold War atmosphere with its authentic East German markings and sleek supersonic profile. Perfect for aviation historians, Cold War enthusiasts, and collectors alike, it offers a striking tribute to one of the Warsaw Pact's early missile-armed interceptors, making it an essential addition to any model aircraft collection.
